Music festival series: Lollapalooza

My experience at Lollapalooza in 2012 is special because it marks the start of my travels around the United States for music festivals. Although I had attended ACL and SXSW for many years prior to my going to Lollapalooza, it was the first festival I went to that wasn’t in my hometown of Austin, Texas. I enjoyed Lollapalooza so much, and had such a great time, that I went the following two years as well before calling it quits.

Here are some of my favorite moments from the three years I attended…

2012 – As I stated before, Lollapalooza was the first festival I went to that wasn’t in my hometown. Because of this, almost everything about this year’s festival was novel and exciting. From staying in a hotel and walking through downtown in my festival outfit every morning to having downtown on one side of the festival and Lake Michigan on the other, Lollapalooza 2012 was a fresh and extremely memorable experience.

2013 – Of the three years I went, 2013 was definitely the year for the music. With some of my favorite artists performing, such as Mumford and Sons, Vampire Weekend, and Kendrick Lamar, I spent most of this year’s festival running around trying to catch every artist I could, and having a blast while doing so.

2014 – Falling in love with the Perry’s stage, and therefore, electronic dance music – Although I had seen quite a few EDM artists prior to Lollapalooza 2014, such as Bassnectar and Skrillex, I wasn’t in love with EDM until my last year of attending Lollapalooza. Following this year’s festival, I began attending mostly EDM concerts and music festivals, and still do so to this day.

Overall, Lollapalooza is an awesome festival. It’s run extremely well, is in a great location, and always has an extremely diverse, yet amazing, lineup. Although I haven’t been to the festival since 2014, it’s definitely still on my radar, and I may return sometime in the future.
